The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority, known as WATA, is a system of bus routes that service the city of Williamsburg and surrounding areas. If you’re vising Williamsburg and prefer to use public transportation, we recommend grabbing a hotel room downtown, like at the Williamsburg Lodge Autograph Collection, where you can access the 3, 5 and 6 bus routes. If you’ve opted for a cheap hotel in Williamsburg by Walnut Hill, like Cedars of Williamsburg Bed & Breakfast, you may prefer taxis or rideshares. Wherever you stay, the city is drivable, so a personal or rented vehicle is also an option.

Since there are many golf clubs in the Williamsburg area that have been designed by expert course architects, the city is a popular destination for avid golfers. If you’re visiting for this reason, we recommend you book hotels in Williamsburg east of downtown. The Griffin Hotel - A Colonial Williamsburg Hotel is a good option at the tip of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. The stops for the 6 and 8 buses are nearby, but a personal vehicle would suit best. For parents visiting their children at the College of William & Mary, you’ll want to stay in one of the B&Bs south of the college by the Walnut Hills neighborhood, which is on WATA routes 6 and 8. Alternatively, hotels just northwest of Historic Downtown, like the Williamsburg Manor B&B on WATA routes 2 and 5, will also put you close to campus.
One of the original American colonial towns, Williamsburg offers many historical and contemporary attractions. We recommend visiting the museums and places of significance in historical downtown, like the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, Governor's Palace, the Wren Building and the Colonial Williamsburg Capitol Building. You can reach the area from bus routes, including the 1, 5 and 6. Once here, partake in tours, see plays and witness historical reenactments; expect some admission fees. For a contemporary experience, head to Busch Gardens Williamsburg, just southeast of Colonial Park, and book accommodations at nearby Williamsburg hotels, like the Courtyard by Marriott Williamsburg Busch Gardens Area, and either drive or grab a taxi to the park. If you catch the 6 bus from downtown, you can visit the Historical Jamestown Settlement, which is an educational and interactive place with a Native American Village, glass making and a ship museum.
The restaurants in Downtown Williamsburg present a number of gastronomic options, including posh French dining, traditional American, Mexican, seafood and even vegan spots. For an intimate multi-course meal, try A Chef's Kitchen, which is within walking distance if you’re staying at one of the hotels in Williamsburg nearby, like the Williamsburg Inn - A Colonial Williamsburg Hotel. If your hotel is further afield, the restaurant can be found near WATA routes 2, 5 and 6. If you’ve booked accommodations closer toward Greensprings—perhaps at Westgate Historic Williamsburg Resort—enjoy a glass of wine at the Silver Hand Meadery, by WATA routes 5 and 8.
