Virginia Beach experiences mild summers and chilly winters. Peak tourist season is from late May – early September when several festivals and events take place in the city. Average temperatures are between 65 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Be prepared for a very crowded beach and peak hotel rates during this time. To experience less crowds, plan your trip in the short shoulder period from April – mid May. While temperatures are still too cold to enjoy the beach, you may be able to get slightly lower rates on accommodation. From mid-September, the cooler weather starts, and temperatures can dip to as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit between November – March. You can take advantage of the low hotel rates, but also take into consideration that several beachside attractions shorten their hours of operation during this time.
If you plan to be near the beach, walking is a good option to explore the area and discover the hotels, shopping and dining options close by. If you’re not up for walking, hop on to the VB Wave Trolley that runs on Atlantic Avenue from Rudee Inlet to 42nd Street every 15 minutes from May – September. The fare is $2.00 USD and a Go – 1 Day Pass costs $4.50 USD. VB Wave also operates The Tide light rail on the outskirts of Virginia Beach and the Elizabeth River ferry service between Norfolk and Portsmouth. Fares for the light rail and ferry service are the same as that for the trolleys. Driving a car in Virginia Beach is the most convenient option to get around from one place to another. However, the area’s 2 main roads, Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Avenue are often heavily congested, and parking is scarce and expensive. Save on car rentals with momondo.
Virginia Beach is a relaxed coastal city that caters to travelers with varied interests. The city’s scenic views, plenty of sunshine, and sandy beaches keep kids engaged for hours, while the affordable nighttime entertainment offers a lot of fun for adults. Most of the city hotels are concentrated around the beachfront which is called the ‘resort area’, while a few accommodation options are also available closer to the town center.
Virginia Beach Boardwalk
The picturesque 3-mile Virginia Beach Boardwalk runs north from Rudee Inlet to 39th Street. The boardwalk, Atlantic Avenue, and Pacific Avenue run parallel to each other just a block apart, and most hotels are located on Atlantic Avenue. With a dedicated biking path, plenty of quaint outdoor restaurants and cafés, and streets packed with shops, this area is a treasured hot spot for tourists as well as locals. Atop a grassy hill overlooking the ocean, you have the historic Cavalier Virginia Beach Autograph Collection Hotels. The iconic hotel has hosted 10 U.S. presidents, and several other global celebrities over the last 100 years. It offers luxurious guest rooms and a host of onsite facilities, including a spa, bourbon distillery, 2 restaurants, landscaped gardens and a Beach Club. You can also look at several other international chain hotels that are lined up along the length of Atlantic Avenue. Towards the north end, you have the Hampton Inn Virginia Beach Oceanfront North hotel, and Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront hotel. Around the central part of the city, check out the Four Points by Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront hotel, or the Best Western Plus Sandcastle Beachfront Hotel. At the southern end, you can consider the SpringHill Suites Virginia Beach Oceanfront hotel.
Town Center / Inland
The hub for shopping, dining, nightlife, commercial services and cultural events, the Town Center area is a bustling neighborhood, a 20-minute drive from the beach. Check out the spacious, well-appointed rooms and suites, and gourmet on-site dining options at the Hilton Garden Inn Virginia Beach Town Center hotel, located amid shops, restaurants and nightlife venues. Close by, you also have The Westin Virginia Beach Town Center hotel that features relaxed rooms, a beautifully-appointed lobby and a heated indoor pool, among other amenities.
In Virginia Beach, finding cheap accommodation along the beachfront is quite easy. In fact, you may be able to pay as little as $50.00 USD per night, and enjoy the scenic ocean views from your hotel room, while being steps away from the beach. In the northern part of the resort area, you have the Econo Lodge Virginia Beach – On the Ocean hotel, Four Sails Resort, and The Oceanfront Inn Virginia Beach hotel. Towards the southern end, stay at The Schooner Inn Hotel & Resort. Closer to the town center, stay at the Day’s Inn Virginia Beach Town Center hotel, or the Crowne Plaza Virginia Beach Town Center hotel.
Virginia Beach is a family-friendly city that boasts over 35 miles of sandy beaches, and a 3-mile concrete oceanfront boardwalk. The city also offers several nature sites that serve as a pleasant break from the crowded beaches and constant buzz of the resort area.
