The whole island of Mykonos is well-served by a public bus system. Mykonos is the name of the island and also the name of the main town on the west coast near the airport, or sometimes called ‘Chora,’ which means ‘town’ in Greek. This is the main tourist area and is most accessible to visitors, with many Mykonos hotels nearby, including Mykonos Beach Hotel, Grand Beach Mykonos and the Mykonos Bay Resort & Villas, all in the Megali Ammos neighborhood. This area is particularly popular with tourists because it’s just a short walk to the town. To find cheap hotels in Mykonos, try Mycocoon Hostel Mykonos in the Kaminakia neighborhood, which is also within walking distance, or Paradise Beach Camping at Paradise Beach on the southern side of the island, accessible using the southern bus depot at the town entrance, called Fabrika.

If you’re looking for Mykonos hotels that offer something more secluded and are not so overrun with tourists, try Mykonos Pantheon near Kalafati, which you can access using the northern bus depot, located behind the Ramezzo Club above the old port. For a romantic getaway, look at the five-star San Marco Hotel & Villas in the Paradisia neighborhood, north of Agios Stefanos, available through momondo and accessible using the bus depot at the old port. For the young at heart who are into old-fashioned partying, you have to be in the town area (Chora), where you can walk everywhere, or rent a moped or a bike.
The archaeological site of Delos, which is an island off Mykonos, is known as the birthplace of Apollo, the Greek god of music and truth. Boats leave to Delos from the port in Mykonos town (Chora). If you’re there in the summer, arrive early for tours around the historical site, and don’t forget to check out the lion statues. You can also take a ferry for day trips from Mykonos to the neighboring islands of Naxos, Paros, Ios or Santorini. For a look at the whole island, try a four-hour island bus tour. Back in the Chora neighborhood, the half-day city walking tour is a great way to get a feel for the western part of the island, where most of the activities are located. Matoyianni Street in the heart of town is where you will find postcards, trinkets and souvenirs. If you want to book hotels in Mykonos, this a great neighborhood to find them. Don’t miss the Church of Paraportiani, just north of Little Venice, which is the famous picture-perfect Greek Orthodox church painted bright white with a domed roof.
There is only one neighborhood that has a large selection of bars and restaurants: Chora. Start with an afternoon walk to the Windmills (Kato Milli) and then end the day at Little Venice, where you can grab a table at sunset and watch the pelicans. For superb Greek Mediterranean food, try Maizevelo, which is a little further out of town, closer to the airport, but still within walking distance. Elia Beach is a paid beach with azure waters, each booking comes with two sunbeds and a parasol, and you can have lunch at the restaurant or bring your own. Scandinavian Disco is a popular club and meeting point for drinks, but the party only gets started after midnight.
The price of a hotel in Mykonos depends on several factors such as star rating, location and demand. Generally speaking, the average cost of a hotel is around $382 per night.
