Ocean City travel tips

Best time to visit Ocean City

From late May – early September, the average temperature of approximately 95 degrees Fahrenheit and low humidity levels offer the perfect weather conditions to enjoy a beach holiday in Ocean City. However, try to book your accommodation in advance as this is also the peak tourist season, and hotel rates can double compared to the rest of the year. Spring months from April – late May are also a good time to visit Ocean City. Average temperatures rise to around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but the sea water may still be a little too cool to swim at this time. Average winter temperatures range between 35 – 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and room rates are at their lowest from November – March. However, several local hotels and inns close for the off-season, so be sure to check the status of your preferred accommodation in advance.

Getting around Ocean City

The 3-mile stretch of Ocean City Boardwalk is lined with many of the top attractions, making it easy to navigate on foot. To venture out to other attractions, you’ll need to rely on the public transit system. Buses operated by Ocean City Transportation run north to south along the Coastal Highway, 24 hours a day. A $3.00 USD Ride-All-Day pass allows you unlimited rides from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 a.m. the next morning. Explore Ocean City in a fun and scenic manner when you ride the Ocean City Boardwalk trams. The comfortable trams travel the entire length of the Boardwalk, and can make a stop at almost any location along the route to load or discharge passengers. The fare is $3.00 USD per person, per boarding, one-way ride. You can also consider the unlimited ride pass, which costs $6.00 USD per passenger for unlimited rides between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Driving is not a preferred option in the city, especially during the peak summer months when the roads are congested, and parking is hard to come by. However, if you do decide to drive to Ocean City, leave your car at the park-and-ride lot on Route 50 in West Ocean City. Free parking is available for extended stays, and 24-hour shuttle buses bring you into the city for $1.00 USD.

Where to stay in Ocean City

Best places to stay in Ocean City

Ocean City features all aspects of a classic American beach vacation. You have a vibrant boardwalk lined with entertainment and eateries, adrenaline-pumping amusement parks, miles of powdery sand, and plenty of souvenir shops. The boardwalk runs through approximately a third the length of the city. Here is how the neighborhoods are broadly defined.

The Boardwalk

The 3-mile long boardwalk runs from the Inlet to 27th Street, and is the hub for most of the action and attractions. There are several amusement parks within the first 5 blocks, plenty of shops, and some interesting bayside restaurants and bars. Check out Ocean City’s most historic waterfront accommodation, the family-owned 1923-dated Atlantic Hotel. Stay here to enjoy the simple, individually decorated rooms, and the convenience of the boardwalk at your doorstep. Another option right on the boardwalk is the Dunes Manor Hotel & Suites, a grand Victorian-style hotel that has kicked up its chic and contemporary quotient several notches higher after a recent renovation. The hotel features spectacular ocean views from every room, and offers a wide range of dining options at its 4 on-site restaurants.

Midtown

Midtown stretches from 28th Street to 62nd Street, and features plenty of bars and restaurants, as well as several family-friendly activities such as mini-golf and go-karting. The ocean and beaches are only a couple of blocks away from most hotels in Midtown. Just a mile away from the Jolly Roger Amusement Parks, check out Castle in the Sands Hotel, an oceanfront resort with excellent on-site facilities and service. With its iconic architecture, this hotel looks like a castle straight out of a storybook, and boasts plenty of family-friendly activities, live music, delicious seafood, and a beach-side bar that serves drinks as you relax under a beach umbrella.

Uptown / North Ocean City

Uptown or North OC extends from the Maryland Route 90 bridge on 62nd Street up to Delaware Line. You will find several high-rise hotels, chic restaurants, and huge outlet malls for tax-free shopping in this area. For the best value-for-money option, check out the Carousel Oceanfront Hotel & Condos. Enjoy the famous on-site ice rink, beach patio with live music, lush tropical lawn with fire pits and tiki torches, and exceptional bay views from all rooms in this hotel. Consider the Princess Royale Oceanfront Hotel that offers spacious, fully-equipped 2-bedroom suites overlooking the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.

Cheap hotels in Ocean City

There are plenty of cheap hotels in Ocean City, and you will not have to compromise on location, views or conveniences to stay in budget-friendly accommodation. Just be prepared for fewer in-room amenities and on-site facilities if you choose a no-frills hotel. Directly on the boardwalk, you have Comfort Inn Boardwalk hotel, Paradise Plaza Inn hotel, and Grand Hotel & Spa. A few blocks from the boardwalk, and steps away from the beach, you have the Hampton Inn & Suites Ocean City / Bayfront – Convention Center hotel. 2 blocks from the beach, you also have the Comfort Inn Gold Coast hotel.
