POPULAR STATION | Providence |
POPULAR TRAIN COMPANY | Amtrak |
Passengers arriving on trains to Providence get off at the Providence Amtrak/MBTA Station, located north of the downtown area. The station is also a hub for the local commuter trains and public buses, making it a well-connected spot to access all of Providence. Both the R-route bus and the 56 bus go from the station’s bus terminal to downtown Providence in a quarter hour or less. Providence is also the home to the Ivy League school Brown University. The university area and College Hill are central areas of Providence and beautiful places that many people like to visit while in Rhode Island's capital city. Visitors can get to these places on foot in less than half an hour, or maybe slightly faster on a bus.
Documentation requirements on Providence trains are defined by the rail companies that run the trains. Amtrak is the main company servicing trains to Providence. Amtrak requires passengers with Providence train tickets to also have a valid form of photo identification on them. For travel to Providence, the company allows the following documents: a Rhode Island or out-of-state driver’s license, passport, student ID, military ID, and others. These documents must not be expired if you plan to use them for identification. It’s recommended that passengers keep both their Providence train tickets and their photo ID on them the whole time they are traveling. They might be asked to show these documents at any point from the time they board the train until they exit. For the Massachusetts MBTA commuter train that passes through the Providence train station, you are not required to show identification in addition to your tickets unless you are using a discounted ticket.
