Car rentals at Muskegon Airport

I don’t recommend booking through Hotwire. They don’t have accurate information about the Avis counter hours or policies for late arrivals. And then Avis can’t discuss the booking if it was made through a 3rd party.

I got a really nice car - Honda Civic with lots of nice features. It smelled really badly of cigarette smoke, though. I had to air it out for a couple of days and have driven it for three weeks and it still smells very bad even though I have been driving with the windows open. It was very clean, otherwise. I love the economy fuel option - very fuel efficient car and fun to drive. The person at the desk was not there when I arrived (on time) and I waited for 15 minutes or so for them to show up at the counter. I called while I was waiting and heard the phone ringing, but, no one answered the phone. After checking out and getting the keys and noticing the smoke smell, I went back inside to make sure I wouldn’t be charged for it and, again, waited for 15-20 minutes for someone to show up at the counter. I don’t know if there’s only one person working there and if they have too much to do, but, it took a lot of patience to wait that long just to get my car and leave (there was no line). Someone should be there to greet people and do a quality check. It was challenging extending my rental - I had to be transferred multiple times to make changes.

Car was available online, but then customer service called me saying they had no cars available. So how was my experience you ask? I didn’t have one!!!

Windshield still had marker on it from when the cat was on sale.

The employee was not at the desk. The doors were wide open. When she finally showed up, while checking me out she takes a personal call. When I finally check the car out I went & look at it & it was dirty. Inside & out. She said she would take money off if I get it washed. When I drop it off on Tuesday they were closed. Also I drop it off two days early, she said when I do return it early I will get those days money back. So far I have not seen that money taken off.

The car was not cleaned upon pick up , on the interior or exterior . There were crumbs and dirt e everywhere . We found a week old take out box of moldy chicken Alfredo under the set when it started to smell . Customer service at the counter was very poor upon pick up . The employees were very unprofessional and were hold other conversations about their plans outside Off work while trying to get me on my way . None of the bill was explained - usually they are very thorough and go over every detail with you , they did not hear . They did not tell me where the car was they told me to just go outside and hit the panic button to find it . Drop off was equally as unpleasant .

The rental car company gave our car away and we ended up with a Camry that was so out of alignment that it should not have been in the parking lot and we had to return it the same day. The second car we we’re given was a smoker’s car and none of us smoke. The third car was nice, but not clean. The attendant feigned little interest in any this disruption to our trip. She knew the first car was not what we rented (a luxury car) and said we could come back to the airport and trade cars (out of our way) and provided two numbers for us to call about doing so. The first was disconnected and the second was never answered. She said she couldn’t smell smoke since she smoked. All you had to do was open a window and you could tell. It was that bad. Like a chimney. On the way back to the airport, someone backed into the car as we were gassing it up to drop off before our flight. It’s been the worst nightmare trying to straighten this out with Budget. There’s no way to contact a person on their menu and ask questions or exchange insurance data. The man who hit us said it was his fault and by the grace of God we made our flight. And a final present was when I looked at my bank statement and realized I was overcharged $150 for the car and don’t have a receipt since the office was closed. I will never rent like this again. It’s been a horrible experience.
