Extremely dangerous experience – serious mechanical failure and negligence I rented a car from Avis / Unidas in Rio de Janeiro and this was one of the worst and most dangerous rental experiences I’ve ever had. The vehicle suffered a serious mechanical failure and completely shut down in the middle of traffic on a narrow road near a favela. I was traveling with my wife and my infant son in the car. The situation was extremely dangerous and required police intervention to manage traffic and prevent a potentially serious accident. We were stranded for a long time until a tow truck and a mechanic arrived. Most concerning of all, the company’s own mechanic stated that the battery installed in the vehicle was NOT the correct battery for that car, confirming that the vehicle was not properly maintained and was unsafe to be on the road. This was not bad luck — it was clear negligence. Despite the real safety risk to my family, the significant loss of time, and the stress caused by this incident, the company refused to offer any form of compensation. To make matters worse, we were then required to travel to the airport to obtain a replacement vehicle, as if the failure had been our responsibility. This goes beyond poor customer service — it reflects a serious failure to provide a safe, roadworthy vehicle and a complete disregard for customer safety. I strongly do not recommend this location, especially for families or anyone concerned about safety.

I took all the insurance. Driving in Brazil is a contact sport. We got a flat. I called for roadside service and was told to take the tire off and get it fixed. I am 60 years old and I don’t change my tires at home. I do not speak Portuguese so even if I got the tire off the car, I would not know where to take it nor could I talk to them if I found them! I asked for a supervisor and was told there was none. I walked to the local Localiza store. (Localiza is the Alamo partner in Brazil). Asked for a manager and was told to drive the car there and they would swap cars! So we distorted the tire driving it flat and they gave us a different car. The moral to the story? USE MOVIDA IN BRAZIL! They would have brought me a New car no questions asked!

Difficult to pick up the car since the employee in the counter only spoke Portuguese.

The car itself was fine… but I was double charged for a reservation and had to argue with the people to get them to fix it

They are basically very amateur and a bit dishonest. They would not release a car to me 3 hours earlier although their lot was full. I was more than willing to pay. The extra charged for a half day was 3 times more than what I paid daily. I find this very dishonest.

All went as expected

The rental charge was 50% more than what it was supposed to be. They charged me for extra insurance which I did not want. The drop off experience was not pleasant because they put on extra costs which didn’t equal my online amount! They also did not return my damage deposit upon drop off.

Unexpected charges were added to the cost of the car, plus they charged to have the car super-cleaned when I dropped it off. Unacceptable!

The instructions for finding a shuttle that would take us to the offsite location to rent the car were so in accurate. We walked around for ever looking for a rental counter and found that the shuttle that was supposed to take us was a green shuttle marked “Localiza”. How were we supposed to know that? We ended up taking a cab to get there.

Insurance isn’t exactly what I understand. Hertz in Brazil is operated by Localiza, any moment Kayak mention that, help you to find the rental place.

There was no booking with the car agency.....e no car......disgraceful

We arrived to the agency and they gave us these options: 1. You can take a car in the size you order with no radio (or audio system at all) 2. Take a smaller car. No compensation, no upgrade, no im sorry. They worst car experience I had in my life. When in Brazil - use ONLY Localiza

I’ve never used their service but comparing to others like Movida or Localiza everything was a let down.
