Salzburg will make you a fan of Baroque architecture. This city of palaces, churches, pedestrian alleys and town squares charms both indoors and out. Known as the city of Mozart, you cannot turn around here without encountering his residence, his birthplace, or at least his balls (Mozartkugeln, literally 'Mozart balls', are round chocolates filled with marzipan and sold in every shop in all of Salzburg). The great composer features prominently in Salzburg’s annual music festival, which attracts world-class talent and hordes of listeners every summer.
In Salzburg you can hang out with a gang of creepy wee statues in the Dwarf Garden behind Mirabell Palace.
A visit to Salzburg’s iconic hillside catacombs and hilltop fortress shouldn’t be missed.
