About Fuerteventura

.

It may be tempting to stick to Fuerteventura’s beaches around Caleta de Fuste and Puerto del Rosario. After all, you are spoiled for choice, with clean stretches of soft sand, romantic forts and a glut of restaurants and bars. But go ahead and leave the beach for a quick trip into the island’s rocky interior. A hike up one of its volcanoes will reward you with the most spectacular views of the island as well as a chance to meet its most famous residents, the goats who graze on the sunburnt plains beneath the volcanoes. You will see them at restaurants too – on the menu. Then there is the artisan town of Betancuria, where flowers trail from balconies and perfume the air.

There are more goats than people on Fuerteventura. Goat cheese and meat feature prominently in the local cuisine.

If you like getting your hands dirty, visit the seafront village of Ajuy, where you can hunt for fossils in the black volcanic sand of its beach.

Until 2012, the wreck of the ocean liner American Star was beached on Fuerteventura. It has now sunk beneath the waves.
