Though Frankfurters are proud of their past, they are a contemporary breed. Revel in boutique bars, quality restaurants, galleries – and check out the excellent collection of American Pop Art and Minimalism in Museum of Modern Art. There is much more to Frankfurt than business conferences and 'Manhattan' high-rises. Stroll the atmospheric streets past the decadent facade of the Alte Oper and the timber-framed Römer square that appears genuinely medieval, though both are 1980s reconstructions of buildings destroyed during World War II.
Renowned writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt in 1749.
Stroll alongside the Main river and see the grand museums like the Städel – containing more of Frankfurt's historic riches. Wrap up the day in Frankfurt's major party district Sachsenhausen. Here, revellers guzzle locally-fermented apfelwein and native Riesling. Both are surprisingly enjoyable – just like Frankfurt itself.
