About Bogota

The Spanish conquistador Jiménez de Quesada belived the land mass that is now Bogatá to be El Dorado, the legendary City of Gold. It wasn’t, but there’s still plenty that glitters in the bustling capital of Colombia. The Spanish left behind frilly churches, pretty squares, mission buildings and museums in La Candelaria, Bogotá’s graceful old heart.

Bogotá has the cleanest tap water in all of South America.

Striking murals created by street artists add contrast to the city’s candy-coloured facades. The first rule of thumb is that coffee in Columbia is never ‘regular’ – the country’s love of coffee is mind-boggling, producing bubbling café culture and respect for the ‘black gold’. Don’t even consider asking for a cup of tea, or soymilk in your latte.

Bogotá is one of the most bike-friendly cities in South America, with an extensive network of cycle paths and lanes.
