Shopping in Madrid

Both European chain stores and specialized shops abound in Madrid. The area around Gran Vía and Sol is full of the former, though some traditional Spanish shops hide out on the smaller streets and squares. The priciest shopping district is in barrio Salamanca, north of the Retiro, where both designer shops and Spanish boutiques vie for the attention of the well-heeled crowd. Malasaña and Chueca, just north of Gran Vía, are full of funkier shops for the hip crowd. South of the Plaza Mayor in La Latina you’ll find shops that make traditional Spanish footwear.
