SkyEurope extend Sale.

Due to big progress on the route between Billund and Keflavik in Iceland, Iceland Express has announced that they from the summer of 2009 will launch a seasonal route from Aalborg to Keflavik. The route will be operated one-a-week, while the route from Billund will continue with its two weekly services.

From the start of the summer schedule British Airways will cancel two of their routes to the East. The routes which will cease operating from March 29 2009 are from London Heathrow to Calcutta in India and Dhaka in Bangladesh. They will also half the number of services operating to Tokyo from two to one on a daily basis.

Eastern Airways will from November 28 stop operating their thrice daily operation between London Stansted and Manchester.

SkyEurope has extended its “Big Winter Sale” with fares available from £ 19. Travel from December to February 2009, on the one-way flights, which are including all taxes and charges. Book by Sunday, November 23.

British Airways will add a fourth daily service on its route between London Heathrow and Dubai. From January 2, the British airline will operate the additional daily service five days of the week.

Northwest will close down its routes from London Heathrow to Detroit and Seattle. The closure, set for January 11 2009 for the Detroit route and January 8 2009 for the Seattle route, will come less than a year after the route opened. The closure of this route also marks the 16th route which has stopped operating since fall, representing about 10 per cent off all capacity operating between the two continents. The other airlines having closed routes are Aer Lingus, Air Canada, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Continental, Delta and United Airlines. However, Northwest’s new partner, Delta, will continue operating the route between London Heathrow and Detroit.

Jet2.com has announced that they will launch a new flight from their base at Manchester Airport to Heraklion in Greece. The route will be launched on May 18, 2009.

Emirates has launched an Economy class sale with offers to many destinations from London Heathrow. Outbound travel must commence between April 16 and June 30, 2009. Destinations include Auckland, Mumbai and Sydney. Return flights are available from £ 486 (ca. € 576). Book by November 30.

New Cross-Atlantic routes.

Jet Airways has announced that they will drop their flight between London Heathrow and the north-western Indian city of Amritsar. The Indian carrier is attempting to reduce cost, and focus on the more profitable routes.

Air Canada will from the first day of June 2009 begin operating a new route between Toronto and Geneva, via Montreal. The service will be operated twice daily both from Canada and from Switzerland.

United Airlines has announced that they will reinstate the service between Denver and London. The route is set to begin operating again on March 29, and since it is a seasonal route it will only operated till the end of October.

Wizz Air will from January 5 2009 begin operating a new route between the Norwegian and Ukrainian capitals. The airline has announced that a twice weekly service will operate on the route between the Oslo Torp Airport and Kiev Airport.

Cross-Atlantic sale from Virgin Atlantic.

Virgin Atlantic is offering flights to the US from its base at London Heathrow Airport. Travel in November and December with a maximum stay of 12 month, and a minimum of a Saturday night. Selections of the available destinations are New York, Chicago and San Francisco. Return fares are available from £ 303 (ca. € 360). Book by 10 pm (GMT) on November 18.

Due to a lack of demand, Flyglobespan has felt obligated to cut a route between Aberdeen Airport and Sharm El Sheikh before the route was launched. The route was set to start on December 17, and marks the third route Flyglobespan cuts from Aberdeen during the past three months. The other two routes were to Barcelona and Lanzarote.

Delta Air Lines has announced its plan to start a route to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The route is set to be launched on June 1, 2009, and will fly daily services to the largest city in Vietnam via Tokyo.

Cimber Air is intending to fight back at the airlines SAS and Norwegian. SAS has cut its online booking fee from DKK 75 to DKK 50, while Norwegian doesn’t charge any fee for booking online. Therefore Cimber Air has decided to cut its fee by up to 73 per cent each way.

Lufthansa set to buy Austrian.

KLM will increase frequency on its service between Durham and Amsterdam. The route operating from the Durham Tees Valley Airport and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport will introduce a larger aircraft, resulting in 7,000 extra seats until March. In addition they will launch a new route between Amsterdam and Liverpool, operating thrice daily, from next summer.

Emirates will from next month launch a new route between London and Dubai. The flight will be operated from Heathrow Airport, operating in the huge Airbus A380 aircraft. The service will be operated daily.

It has been announced that Lufthansa will take over Austrian Airlines, meaning that both the Air France-KLM and Russian S7 groups are out of the running. Lufthansa, which also are set to buy Brussels Airlines, are set to take over before the end of the year. Lufthansa already owns Swiss Air.

Air Berlin has announced that they will launch a new route to the British island Jersey, off the coast of Normandy. Between May and September of 2009, the German airline will launch the new summer route, operating from Düsseldorf. The route will be operated from May 16 to September 12.

British Airways has launched a new sale on flights to New York. Travel from European cities as London, Madrid and Copenhagen with prices from $ 396 (ca. € 316) on return tickets. Travel between November 18 and December 17, and again from December 24 to March 22, 2009. Book by midnight (EST) Thursday, November 13.

Delta Air Lines will from June 2009 launch a new route between Gothenburg and New York. The route will be the first direct flight between the two cities since SAS cancelled the same route in the late 70’s. The service will be operated from Landvetter Airport to JFK in New York.

Worldwide sale from United Airlines.

United Airlines is offering a worldwide sale with fares available from $ 454, for return tickets exclusive of taxes and fees. Destinations are available around the globe, e.g. Athens, Rio de Janeiro, Chicago and Dubai. Travel between November 6 and December 11, and again from December 25 through April 2, 2009. Outbound flights must be made on Monday through Thursday. Book by November 13.

Sun-Air will open a new route between Billund and London City Airport. The route, which will be operated twice daily, in the morning and evening, will have its first flight on January 19, 2009. The route will only be operated once on Sunday. From January, the airline will also increase capacity on routes from Billund to Brussels and Paris.

Mexicana, the national airline from Mexico, will launch a new route between Mexico City and London. The route will be launched on January 18, 2009, operating twice a week in the first month, on Thursday and Sunday. From February two additional flights will be operated on Friday and Monday.

British Airways will suspend four routes in its summer schedule for 2009. The airline will cancel flights from London Heathrow to Dhaka and Kolkata in India, as well as from London Gatwick to Dublin and Zurich.

Birthday sale from Brussels Airlines.

Virgin Atlantic has launched a sale with discounted flights to Dubai with seats available from £ 299 (ca. € 366), including all fees, charges and surcharges. bmi has announced that they will increase capacity on two of its routes from its base at London Heathrow Airport. The routes to Cairo and Amman will be operated by two wide-bodied Airbus aircrafts from the spring of 2009, and thereby increasing the number of seats on each flight.

Transavia is set to launch five new routes from Copenhagen Airport. Many airlines have announced new routes from the Danish capital following the bankruptcy of Sterling. Transavia has announced routes to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Nice and Rome. Routes will be operated from December, operating 28 weekly flights.

Brussels Airlines is celebrating its birthday by launching a sale to 37 destinations. Fares are available from € 49.99, one-way all inclusive. Book by midnight on Tuesday November 11.

Air Berlin make schedule changes for Copenhagen.

Air Berlin has announced changes for its services from Copenhagen in the summer schedule of 2009. The airline will continue operating routes to Berlin, Düsseldorf and Mallorca. Flights to Berlin Tegel will be operated twice daily in weekdays and daily on the weekends, while the flight to Palma de Mallorca will be operated daily all week long. To Düsseldorf there will be three daily flights on weekdays, and daily services in the weekend.

easyJet has announced a summer sale for 2009. Flights from the airline’s base at East Midlands Airport are available from just £ 22.99 (ca. € 28) one-way and £ 44.78 (ca. € 55) for returns, both including taxes. Destinations include sunny destinations as Ibiza, Alicante and Malaga. Book as soon as possible in order to benefit from the cheapest fares.

Ryanair has announced that they will launch 11 new routes from its base at Edinburgh Airport, but the destinations have not been announced yet. What they have told us is that they will base two Boeing 737-800 aircrafts at the airline’s home base. Four of the routes have been announced to fly to ski destinations Grenoble and Turin, and Italian destinations Cagliari and Bologna.

Delta Air Lines will introduce fees for checked bags on domestic flights. The new fee will be on par with the airline’s merger partner Northwest Airlines, being $ 15 for the first checked bag and $ 25 for the second.

US Airways is set to start a new route between Philadelphia in the US, and Birmingham in the UK. The route will be launched on May 12, 2009, operating on a daily measure.

Many routes are closing between the UK and the US. Last week, British Airways announced that they were closing its only route to the US, operating from outside of London. Now, British Midland has announced that they will close all of its routes between Manchester and the US and Caribbean. From the middle of January the service from Manchester to Chicago will close, followed by services to Las Vegas, Barbados and Antigua closing after Easter.

Cimber Air is taking over some of the market left after the bankruptcy of Sterling. The airline will up its frequency on routes from Billund to Oslo and Copenhagen, as well as from Aalborg to Copenhagen. From November 24 they will also launch a new route between Billund and London, with one-way fares available from DKK 495. The route will be operated on a daily basis until the summer, where they will increase the services to thrice daily.

bmi cut fuel surcharges on European flights.

bmi has announced that they are removing all the fuel surcharges on its services in Europe. The worsening economic situation is the reason for the move, aiding the customers with more affordable and transparent airfares. All the short-haul flights operated by the airline’s subsidiary bmi regional will still have a surcharge on fuel.

KLM will from March 29, 2009 launch a new route between Liverpool John Lennon Airport and the Dutch capital Amsterdam. The route will be operated thrice daily. The resumption of the route has been long in the coming, since the last time the route was operated by a KLM aircraft was on August 21, 1939.

Ryanair has launched two new routes from its south coast airbase in Bournemouth. The services will operate thrice weekly to Paris Beauvais Airport and Milan Bergamo Airport.

Italian carrier Alitalia is temporarily suspending its service between Rome Fiumicino and Los Angeles International airport. The suspension comes only 5 months after the service was launched. However, the airline has already put a date on the day the service is set to resume, namely March 26, 2009.

Big American domestic sale from Continental Airlines.

Air Berlin will add an extra daily service on its route between London Stansted and Dusseldorf. The route will be operated by the new standard from February 2, 2009. At the same time a twice-daily connection will fly from Dusseldorf to Dresden, commencing on December 1, providing further access to Germany. Fares start from £ 24 (ca. € 30), one-way on travel from Monday through Friday.

This weekend Delta Air Lines launched a direct flight from Atlanta to Mumbai. The route is operated on a daily basis from the airline’s main base to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, India.

Continental Airlines has launched a big domestic sale with fares available from $ 78 (ca. € 62) on returns, exclusive of taxes and fees. Discounted fares are available only on specific dates, seats are limited and the deals are non-refundable. Destinations include Atlanta, Houston and New York, amongst many.

easyJet today launched a new route between London Gatwick and the Finnish capital Helsinki. The route comes after a poll, commissioned by easyJet revealed that 76 % of all Finns wanted more low-cost flights from the capital.

Airlines offer help fares for stranded Sterling passengers.

British Airways is offering its customers a worldwide sale, with both one-ways and returns available. Travel to European destinations from £ 42 (ca. € 54), one-way including taxes and charges. Transatlantic as well as many Asian destinations are available from £ 279 (ca. € 355) for return flights. Book by November 11.

easyJet is filling the void left by the collapse of Sterling, by launching a new route from London Gatwick to Copenhagen. The route is set to launch on January 15, 2009, operating daily, with tickets going on sale on November 15.

Icelandair are set to cancel all of its winter flights from its base at Glasgow Airport. Due to the ongoing financial crisis in Iceland, all flights have been suspended between December 4 and 28, as well as January 8 to March 22, 2009. Flights will still be operating in the New Year’s Eve period.

Lending a hand to travellers affected by the Sterling collapse, easyJet and Ryanair have introduced services exclusively for Sterling passengers left stranded by the collapse. easyJet is offering one-way tickets from £ 35 (ca. € 45) including all taxes, one-way on the three routes from Copenhagen to London, Berlin and Milan. Ryanair is offering € 100, all-inclusive rescue fares to destinations in Aarhus, Billund, Gothenburg, Oslo Torp and Stockholm Skavsta.

Lufthansa aquire majority of bmi.

Lufthansa has acquired the majority of the British airline bmi, complementing its 30 per cent stake in the airline, by an extra 50 per cent holding, currently owned by the airline’s chairman. It is expected that Lufthansa will make a bid on the remaining 20 per cent, currently owned by SAS.

Ryanair has announced seven new routes from its base at London Luton Airport. Four of them were launched on Monday and Tuesday, running to Beziers (France), Derry (Northern Ireland), Kaunas (Lithuania), Szczecin (Poland) and Trapani (Italy). The two remaining routes will fly to Biarritz (France) and Rzeszow (Poland).

SAS has re-launched is route between Copenhagen and New Delhi, after originally being operated in 2001-2002. The route will be serviced three times weekly in the winter period, until March. The airline has also launched a route to Bangkok from Stockholm. The route is also a winter period only flight, but will operate until April instead of March.

Virgin Atlantic is offering a sale on first class seats. Fly from London Airports to big city destinations around the globe. Travel on selected sates between the end of November this year and the beginning of January next year, with fares available from £ 1,200 (ca. € 1,530). Book by 10 pm (GMT) on November 25.

Danish airline Sterling collapses.

The Danish carrier Sterling has files for bankruptcy, leaving thousands of passengers stranded, mainly around Europe. The entire fleet of 27 aircrafts has been grounded. After negotiations with several potential investors broke down late Tuesday night, the airline has no other option than to turn the key. Sterling Airlines was founded in 1962, is the third European airline to fold after the recent collapse of XL Airways and Zoom Airlines.

Norwegian has launched 11 new routes from its new base at Copenhagen Airport. Sterling was operating 40 routes from the airport, and Norwegian will so far operate 11 of them. From November 6 routes will fly to Aalborg, Alicante, Malaga, Nice, Oslo and Stockholm. Routes to Oslo, Stockholm and Aalborg will be operated daily, while the rest will be operated 2-3 times weekly. As soon as possible routes to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Krakow, London, Pisa, Prague and Rome will be launched.

Other airlines are also adjusting its schedule after the collapse of Sterling. SAS is augmenting the number of flights on its services between Copenhagen and Gothenburg as well as Malmo to Stockholm, both services previously operated by Sterling. Spanair will from the summertime double its number of services to Barcelona from one to two daily flights, as well as to extra services in the weekend to Malaga.

Clickair will launch a new route between the two Spanish destinations Bilbao and Palma from the end of March next year.
