EXPO ZARAGOZA 2008

en by Momondo , 13. Jun 2008

The exposition that gave us the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Atomium in Brussels hits the north eastern Spanish town of Zaragoza June 14. We are of course talking about Expo (also known as World’s Fair), which today is the third largest event in the world in terms of economic and cultural impact, after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.

Zaragoza has never been a favorite among foreign tourists, but just like Frank Gehry’s already iconic Guggenheim Museum has put Bilbao on the world map, the Expo 2008 will be a major boost to Zaragoza’s tourism industry and the organizers expect that the event will attract more than 5 million visitors.

The theme of Expo Zaragoza 2008 is as hot and contemporary as it can get: 'Water and sustainable development'! To stick to the topic the event is being placed next to the River Ebro, where the exhibition’s most emblematic buildings will be the Water Tower, a 76-metre-high transparent building designed to evoke a drop of water (don’t miss the 720 square meters panoramic bar at the upper floor), Zaha Hadid's Bridge Pavilion, a 270-metre-long covered bridge crossing the river and the River Aquarium, which will be the biggest freshwater aquarium in Europe.

To further emphasize the focus on water and sustainable development the organizers has hooked up with Bob Dylan, who has written a new version of his song “A hard rain’s a-gonna fall” for the occasion.

In total, Expo Zaragoza 2008 has 140 pavilions and 3.400 shows and cultural events are planned. The exposition will be held from June 14 to September 14.

I would like to mention "Budget trip". It would be very helpful if you could provide some information.

I, foe example, would be arriving from Cologne, Germany, using public transport.

The first question is how to arrive at Zaragoza. There's an airport there, but when I visited the city in 2004, there was hardly any traffic at that airport.

Is there a train connection between Bilbao and Zaragoza, or do you have to take the bus?

The second concern is about accommodation. There are hotels, sure. But like in other Spanish cities, there are also pensiones or residencias, where you can find accommodation from 15-25 €/night. It would be great to find a list of such places somewhere in the net, even more so if you could provide it. I'm sure that there are also others who are interested to come to Zaragoza (a city I enjoyed very much, by the way), but who simply don't have the money to spend 200-300 € a day. Those people wouldn't be helped if they were to stay at Huesca, Jaca, Teruel, Calatayud or Cariñena. They would want to find a bed in Zaragoza. Unfortunately, when I google to find solutions, all I get are commercial organizations with the usual business charges.

Can you help?

Thanks in advance!

Dear John

Thanks for you questions.

About how to get to Zaragoza, the best option is perhaps flying to Madrid or Barcelona and then take the train to Zaragoza, the fast train called AVE. You'll find all the information about trains in Spain here: www.renfe.es

Regarding accommodation. All Spanish Tourist offices have lists of all kind of accommodation in all the Spanish cities. Just contact your nearest Spanish Tourist Office and they will for sure help you. You'll find all the Spanish Tourist Offices here: www.spain.info

I suggest you also post your questions in our community (under Share).

All the best

David

Hi John,

Surely there is cheap accommodation like pensiones. It would be hard to list here some of them but for a comprehensive reference visit the following site

http://www.visitaragon.es

It allows you to search for accommodation in the entire region of Aragon including Zaragoza, of course.

Also visit Zaragoza's council site for more information on this

www.zaragoza.es/.../default_de.htm

Regarding fligths to Zaragoza from Germany, there are connections with Frankfurt, Brussels and Paris for your reference. But if you want to fly to Madrid or Barcelona, the high-speed train takes about 1h 30 mins to get to Zaragoza from both cities.

From Bilbao you also have the option of train or coach.

All the best and enjoy Zaragoza and the Expo. We will see us there
